Using Traffic Exchanges for Advertising and “Branding”
Posted by | Posted in Traffic Exchanges | Posted on 29-03-2010
Traffic exchanges are not a new form of online advertising. They have actually been around since the late 1990s. But many look upon them as a waste of time and effort. Nothing could be farther from the truth.
The literal meaning of traffic exchange was, and still is, “you look at my advertisement and I will look at yours”. It is an exchange of page views and offers similar to using classified ads in a newspaper, with the exception of the fact that the “price” for advertising is looking at other subscribers’ offers so that they can and will look at yours.
Today’s traffic exchanges are much the same as when the concept was first put into practice, with some updates and features that can net the traffic exchange member greater benefits than what the earlier “subscribers” could get. While one can still use traffic exchanges to advertise products and services, the main focus of traffic exchanges these days should be to “brand” oneself online.
Ah. There’s the question, “What do you mean by “brand oneself online”?” The answer to that can be a little complex. So let’s “walk” through it.
What’s the first thing you do when you walk into a store to purchase something, assuming that it’s a new store in which you’ve never shopped before? Do you browse around a little bit? Do you wait for the sales person to walk up to you and ask if he or she can assist? Either way, you are seeking to familiarize yourself with the store and its sales staff. You want know what’s available, where to find it and how capable the people are in assisting you.
What about the displays in the store? Are your eyes drawn to the more attractive ones? Are you interested in finding out more about a product or service that is offered if you see a display?
How about if you see an advertisement in print or on television? Are you attracted to the ones that give you information? Are you more impressed with the company that provides the products or services advertised if you know more about their background? Are you more inclined to purchase products or services from a company whose reputation as reliable and responsible is well-known?
Think about your responses to the above questions. Now, equate that to surfing traffic exchanges. As a shopper, you want to know about the people from whom you are liable to purchase. You want to know a little about their reputations and their commitments to providing quality products and services. You are more likely to purchase from someone with a good reputation and ethics than you are from some “fly-by-night” source about which you know nothing.
As an advertiser, you have a responsibility to your potential new purchasers or prospects to put yourself out there and give them the opportunity to get to know you, as best they can, through your “branding”. If you are skeptical about purchasing from unknown sources, how can you expect anyone else with that same skepticism to just “jump on the bandwagon” and purchase from you?
Sure, there are impulse buyers online who will not care. Sure, there are those who just grab anything that looks attractive, then exhibit “buyer’s remorse”, asking for their money back if they find that the “bill of goods” you sold them does not measure up to the promises.
So how do you circumvent this? Do you want repeat business? Do you want a list of reliable prospects who are willing to come back and purchase from you again? Then use traffic exchanges to help them get to know you. It’s not as though you can physically step into their living rooms or offices and present yourself and your products or services in person. So use tools in traffic exchanges that will allow them to learn a little about you, what you look like and what you stand for. Reputation is everything, when you are conducting online business. Traffic exchanges give you a way to build that reputation so that you do move forward and succeed at what you are trying to accomplish.
One very good tool to use for “branding” is splash pages. There are plenty of free programs out there that will allow you to use them and provide excellent resources and directions on how to put your own splash page together. Here are a couple that are highly recommended:
